Deep Fried Tequila Cake Nugger

Recently the internet was ablaze with people sharing an amazing boozy dessert: deep fried tequila shots.  The original post coming from Oh Bite It.

Mrs Grillah wanted a Mexican themed dessert to go with the beef tacos, there was no contest – deep fried tequila for the win.  In keeping with the tequila theme she also decided to whip up a lime sorbet to cut through some of the richness of the cake nugger.


You’ll need a cake to deep fry.  The Oh Bite It post recommends angel cake – Mrs Grillah, being a baking extraordinaire, decided to knock one up using this recipe.  Storebought will work too.

If you don’t have a deep fryer you can make this using a saucepan of oil or whatever.  Heat it up to about 180 celsius and you’re ready to fry.


Quickly soak the cake nugger in tequila then cook in batches.  The cake will absorb tequila pretty quickly but I would question how much really remains after frying them in hot oil.

Meanwhile take out the lime sorbet you prepared earlier.  This wasn’t part of the Oh Bite It post but I think it was a great addition, the recipe is here – I had zero involvement in this so won’t comment any further!

Dust the nugger with some icing sugar and the whole thing is ready to go.  You’ll want to make extra to test to, um, ensure quality control.


These bites are freakin’ delicious – as they should be, I mean it’s deep fried cake for fuck’s sake.

I’m not convinced that these end up being particularly boozy – they soaked up quite a bit of tequila prior to cooking but didn’t taste very alcoholic after.  I was drinking before, during and after consuming these though so perhaps I need to run a control group next time!

    I see this with spiced rum. Looks great though. Perhaps a tequila buttercream dipping sauce to amp up the booze? Did you deep fry the worm?
