Recipe: Jarritos Cola BBQ Sauce

This recipe came about after being inspired by the Port Macquarie BBQ Competition.  See, they had a mystery ingredient category in the competition and it turned out that mystery ingredient was Jarritos soft drink – any flavour you please – to be used to make a BBQ sauce.

As I couldn’t make it across to the comp I thought I would try and live vicariously by attempting my very own Jarritos BBQ sauce recipe.

Jarritos have half a dozen or so flavours, you’ve probably seen them at your local Mexican restaurant – my favourites are the mandarin flavour and the cola.  I chose the latter for my sauce as cola BBQ sauces are always a winner.

  • 1 ½ cups tomato sauce
  • 2 bottle Jarritos Cola
  • ½  cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tsp vegemite
  • 2 tbsp sriracha
  • ¼ cup worcestershire
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder

Combine all the ingredients in a pan over a medium heat.  Bring to a simmer and reduce the liquid until it reaches a nice thick consistency and begins to taste sweeter.  It reduced by approximately one third, but you’ll need to just keep testing and tasting throughout until you are happy with the final product.

Allow to cool and serve over your favourite BBQ meats!

Note: You could substitute a different cola like Coke but you may need to adjust your quantities because the sugar level in the Jarritos is a lot lower than commercial colas.

I was really happy with how the sauce turned out: sweet, but not as sickeningly sweet as some storebought sauces, and with a nice kick from the Sriracha.

Let me know if you give it a try.

Hmmm, Mexican cola with less sugar? Perhaps they use real cane sugar and not corn syrup? I find that to be the case with our Latin sodas. Better taste!
